Push Email: the next generation iPhone will support Microsoft’s business e-mail server software Microsoft Exchange and a “push” email functionality similar to BlackBerry. Software: contact search, meeting invitations, and an advanced calculator. Nike iPhone: Stuff.tv is kicking back in Nike’s HQ at the moment and claims to have official word about Nike’s future plans with Apple. They say that the Nike+ system will “definitely” extend beyond the iPod nano to support the relatively bulky iPhone and iPod touch. GPS iPhone: According to iPhone Hellas: “secret” documents reveal the next iPhone will have built in support for Bluetooth headsets and possibly even GPS navigation. US network NBC today became the second broadcaster to offer downloads of its most popular TV shows on Apple’s iTunes service. From this morning NBC started offering cable shows such as Battlestar Galactica and Knight Rider alongside current hits such as Surface, which users can download to their iPods. NBC’s US homepage showed details of the new offerings, which included Law and Order, My Name is Earl, Fear Factor and The Triangle, roughly a month after the NBC Universal chief, Robert Wright, confirmed the company was in discussions with Apple about offering programming on iTunes. Disney’s ABC network was the first broadcaster to offer its shows on the online service, bringing hit series Lost and Desperate Housewives to the iPod when a new video-enabled version launched in October. According to the reports, NBC was offering its shows at $1.99 a download, the same price charged by Disney and Steve Job’s Pixar Animation Studios, the other two content providers on the enhanced service. NBC’s decision is bound to put pressure on CBS, the other big US network and other cable networks, to offer downloads of their shows if not necessarily via iTunes. Unlike ABC, NBC will be able to advertise on iTunes when its shows will air on TV. Initially slow to get their shows online, US broadcasters are embracing the concept of TV downloads as more viewers demand programmes they can watch anywhere at any time. TV programmes are currently available to download only on iTunes’ US service. Last month the American digital video recording pioneer TiVo said it was launching a service that would let subscribers transfer their favourite recordings to their iPods or PSPs. “The increasing popularity of mobile devices for viewing video, such as Apple’s iPod and the PSP device, demonstrate the enormous consumer demand for entertainment on the go,” Tom Rogers, the chief executive of TiVo, said.

First there was the iPod, then the mini-iPod, and after that the iPod on which you can store your photographs. Now its relentless march is to continue with the iPod mobile phone. According to reports in New York, Apple, the company behind the phenomenally successful digital music player, will next week launch a music-playing mobile in conjunction with Motorola. Roger Entner, a telecommunications analyst with research firm Ovum, told the New York Times that he had been briefed on the announcement last week. The new phone, he said, would be compatible with Apple’s iTunes software, which has helped to sell millions of iPods. “It’s a deluxe music player now on your cellphone,” he said. The speculation was further fuelled by the announcement of a mystery launch from Apple Computer due to take place in San Francisco next Wednesday. “1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again,” said an enigmatic statement from the California computer firm. The project to build a phone compatible with the iPod has been under way for some time, but has been dogged by delays, allowing rivals such as Sony Ericsson and Nokia to push forward with their own music-playing models. But Apple will be hoping that it can successfully translate the iPod formula and capture some of the world’s estimated 1 billion mobile phone users. “It’s been awaited for a year, if not more,” said Thomas Husson, a mobile analyst with Jupiter Research. “That means people might be disappointed, because I don’t think it will be much more than a phone that can play music – and there are already others on the market that can do that. But iTunes and iPod are quite famous now in the music space, and they will be hoping for leverage.” The so-called iPhone will be entering an increasingly crowded market. Sony Ericsson’s recently launched W800i phone has proved extremely popular and Nokia’s N series phones – which will contain enough memory to store 1,000 songs – will be in shops by the end of the year. But one of the iPhone’s biggest competitors will be the iPod itself, with some observers predicting that Apple could merely cannibalise its own market and reduce sales of the cheapest versions of its music players. Some analysts have questioned whether mobile phone networks will refuse to carry the phone for fear that it could damage their own music download services. There have also been rumours of conflict between Apple and Motorola over how to promote the gadget. Motorola, the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, has a history of advertising new products months ahead of their proposed launch date, while Apple prefers to keep its cards close to its chest and make high-impact, last-minute announcements.

The iPod seems to have induced a certain trend in the consumer electronics industry as many companies on the market rushed to manufacture accessories for the little device that allows you to take music with you wherever you go. Speakers and headphones were among the first choices as iPod accessories for consumer electronics companies. The next step was wireless speakers and headphones to allow more freedom of movement. We’ll try to discuss the pros and cons of wireless peripherals for the iPod as well as the models that each wireless component works with. Logitech Logitech began marketing in 2005 a wireless headphone unit that works with any model of iPod that has a dock connector on the base. This feature is standard on all new models and is available on older models as well. The headphones use Bluetooth technology to connect to the iPod through an adapter that transmits the signal. They come with rechargeable batteries that supposedly can play up to eight hours of music per charge. The wireless headset is very light and weighs only 3.2 ounces, with the adapter unit weighing less than an ounce. iPod controls are provided on one of the earpieces, so there is no need to return to the iPod to adjust the volume or move through the play list. The iPod can be left sitting on a counter or on a desk, and the headphones will pick up the signal for up to 30 feet away. Logitech also markets a wireless music receiver and transmitter that turns your current stereo into a receiver and set of speakers for your iPod. It comes with its own rechargeable batteries so it doesn’t drain your iPod. The receiver unit simply plugs into your stereo system and the transmitter onto your iPod. The system works with any iPod or MP3 player with a standard 3.5mm headphone output. The benefit of this system is that you can use it to make your existing speakers wireless without having to purchase additional equipment. It is easy to plug in and use so you can easily move to other rooms in the house. The only drawback is the 30-feet distance restriction between the receiver and the transmitter. Macally Macally designed a Bluetooth based BlueWave iPod headset that connects to the iPod through a transmitter plugged into the iPod’s headphone port. One issue with the BlueWave system is that the transmitter unit doesn’t use the iPod’s connector for power but two non-rechargeable AAA batteries. Another issue would be the plastic notch situated by the headphone jack that prevents the transmitter from wobbling on the iPod’s top and which you will need to remove if you own an iPod shuffle or a first or second generation iPod. The signal’s range should be around 30 feet but it varies greatly depending on the environment you are in, especially if doors or walls stand in the way. The headphones can provide up to eight hours of interrupted music depending on volume level and other factors. They are also powered by two non-rechargeable AAA batteries. With the BlueWave system you can also wirelessly stream music from your iPod by connecting the headphones to the home speaker system with a RCA patch cable that fits in the line-out jack from the headphones. Oregon Scientific Oregon Scientific released in 2005 a very interesting wireless speaker system designed for the iPod, the iBall. The speaker is shaped like a bowling ball and it connects to a transmitter dock, that holds the iPod, through 2.4 Ghz wireless technology, with adaptive frequency hopping spread spectrum. The signal range should be up to 100 feet and the rechargeable batteries provide up to 8 hours of music on a single charge. It is compatible with iPods, iPod photos, iPod nanos, and iPod minis. The iBall has a built-in remote for the iPod which you can use even if the iPod is not in the room. The speaker has a round LCD display that you can use to change volume and skip tracks, find out the time, wireless signal strength, battery power, play/pause status. Wi-Gear The iMuffs from Wi-Gear are wireless headphones made especially for the iPod but with a twist. They use Bluetooth technology to connect wirelessly to both your iPod and your Bluetooth enabled phone, so you can use them as a wireless headset for the cell phone. When you receive a call, the iMuffs pause the music on the iPod, ring in the headphones and allow you to speak in the integrated microphone. The iMuffs system has a small receiver that hooks on top of the iPod and comes with a rechargeable battery that provides up to 12 hours of interrupted music. As expected with Bluetooth, the iMuffs headphones can pick up the signal in the 30 feet signal range. They also feature iPod controls on each earpiece for pause, volume, skip and search. In the future, the market of wireless headphones and speakers for the iPod will become a bigger share of the overall iPod accessories market, as the signal range will increase, the audio output quality will get better and the batteries the manufacturers use for power will allow more hours of playtime. Since their debut in the marketplace, iPods have revolutionized the way we listen to music. iPod hard drives store up to 300 hours of music, batteries last for 12 hours, and the volume can be cranked up to 120 decibels. That’s louder than a chain saw or pneumatic drill, and equivalent to a jet plane taking off! But iPod fans are being warned to turn their music down. Even manufacturer, Apple, includes a cautionary note with every iPod, warning, “permanent hearing loss may occur if earphones or headphones are used at high volume.” Currently, 16 million baby boomers have hearing loss and the number is expected to surge to 78 million by 2030. Amazingly, nearly three-quarters of them admit that they have never visited a doctor or hearing health specialist to have a hearing test. In spite of this lack of concern, there are more boomers aged 46 to 64 with hearing loss than seniors over the age of 65 with the same condition, and hearing loss among baby boomers is 26 percent more common than in previous generations. Loud music and noise causes hearing loss by damaging the delicate hair nerve cells in the cochlea, a part of the inner ear that helps transmit sound impulses to the brain. These hair cells often recover from temporary damage. However, permanent damage can occur with prolonged exposure to extremely loud or moderately loud noise. When these nerve hair cells are destroyed, irreversible hearing loss results. Many people who listen to iPods in noisy environments pump up the volume to dangerous levels to drown out background noise. Busy city hubs and subway noise (around 90 decibels) are already sufficiently loud to cause permanent damage with considerable exposure. Although the damage from chronic exposure to these sound levels is generally slow, it is cumulative. Music lovers who tolerate noise levels above 85 decibels for long periods will end up with irreversible hearing loss. Here are five steps you can take to protect yourself from hearing loss: 1. Limit the volume of your iPod to 60 decibels (db), about two-thirds of the maximum volume. 2. Try to limit listening to no more than 60 minutes a day. 3. Wear sound-isolating or noise-canceling headphones that fit over the ear, instead of ear buds that are inserted directly in the ear. This is because when using ear buds, you still hear the external noise. You turn up the volume to drown out the noise, boosting the sound signals by as much as six to nine decibels over the noise. You can hear the music from your iPod, but you are unaware of the excessive volume. 4. Take advantage of the free download Apple is now offering for the iPod Nano, and iPod models with video-playback capabilities. The download contains a setting to limit the volume. 5. If you are experiencing tinnitus (ringing in the ears), muffled sound after listening to your iPod, or you are having difficulty hearing conversations, visit to a physician and take a hearing test. During my first 20 years in hearing health practice, our clientele were mainly seniors around 75 years of age. However, over the past 10 years, I have noticed a huge difference in our clientele. Nowadays, baby boomers of all ages are making appointments, and most of them have noise-induced hearing loss. Loud rock music and living life ‘full on’ in an amplified noisy society have contributed to hearing loss amongst baby boomers. There are plenty of smartphones, but only two celebrities. Like other big celebs, they go by one name: Blackberry and iPhone.

Oh sure, theres the HTC powered by Googles Android mobile OS. Palm is back in the game with the Pre. Nokia is a force to be reckoned with in most of the world. But, with the enterprise business pretty much sewn up by Research in Motion and consumers snapping up Apple handsets like there is no tomorrow, there is really only one question:

What are you iPhone or Blackberry? It makes for a great geek debate.

For comparison, I considered the higher end Blackberry phones (Bold, Curve, Storm) versus the iPhone 3G. (It wouldnt be advantageous to compare an iPhone 3G to Blackberry Pearl, when the Pearl is less than $50. Anyone on a budget would be inclined toward the Pearl; at least I know I would.) Mostly its just an overall comparison, iPhone to Blackberry. mano a mano.

Ive broken it down into several categories and will assign a point to the phone that wins each category to keep it fair.

Applications

Recently, a co-worker wrote an application for his Blackberry that would automatically ignore calls to his phone from a particular mail-order steak company. The application allowed him to command his phone to ignore any number he specified. The call still rang through, but was ignored immediately. I found this to be the most helpful application Ive ever seen.

That said, Ive not been impressed by the application selection the Blackberry offers. While there are some free applications, most are second rate at best and the selection of pay applications isnt nearly as robust as it should be. The Blackberry App Store is like a pawn shop that only sells used 8-track players.

Application development on the iPhone has been one of the highlights of the device since its inception. Developers are encouraged to design and sell their own applications, and there are thousands of applications available in the iPhone App Store. Even though there are several hundred useless applications, there are hundreds more to make life easier in the palm of your hand. Like the Remote application that turns your iPhone into a stereo remote so you dont have to leave the comfy confines of your easy chair.

My personal current favorite is Urbanspoon. With a shake of the iPhone, it randomly selects the nearest restaurants so you dont have to suffer through the predictable lunchtime negotiations about where to eat.

Thats pretty much my sentiment when it comes to most iPhone applications. That aside, due to the overwhelming availability of applications and the encouragement by Apple to design your own, iPhone takes this category by a wide margin. iPhone +1.

Physical Attributes

Early on, the iPhone had a bad reputation for being fragile because of the touchscreen face and slick feel. When dropped on the cement too many times, any phone would eventually break, but the iPhone proved that it actually is quite durable. As long as you dont drop it on its face. Without anything protecting the glass, you are looking at a shattered iPhone. However, there are products on the market to help protect your iPhone, from rubber sleeves to hard plastic cases (though the plastic cases do add to the bulk factor). The real question is, will it blend? Hell yes itll blend.

The touchscreen and motion sensibility on the iPhone is unmatched by any other touchscreen devices. Bump to exchange contact information, play games by tilting the phone, zoom in with a finger slide motion. Its simply amazing technology and even the touchscreen Blackberry Storm doesnt come close. But you still wouldnt want to drop an iPhone more than once.

Since I drop my cellphones a lot, I strolled over to talk to my IT friends about the durability of the Blackberry. They are about split even on which phone they carry. There are either Blackberry phones or iPhones in IT. Ive never seen an Android or a Palm Pre in the building. They are not split on the durability however. Several of them have had to replace their iPhones due to cracked screens. Many of them have dropped their Blackberry over and over with little more than some scratches on the casing. The worst Ive heard about the damage to a Blackberry is the scratching it gets on the back if you spin it around on the table too many times. Which is just too much fun not to do.

Even if it gets run over by a truck the Blackberry still holds its form, avoids cracks and doesnt lose a key. The Blackberry, built for business and travel, is a durable and strong phone. Blackberry takes this category. Blackberry + 1

Gaming

The iPhone makes full use of the motion sensor and touchscreen to bring us dynamic games from flight simulators to action games to simple board games. Playing games on the iPhone is a fantastic and handy experience, especially multiplayer games. Plus, as mentioned before, you can design your own games if you have the know-how.

Personal vs. Business Functionality

Companies run Blackberry server products. From the connectivity to Microsoft Exchange server and the ease of mobile e-mail, the Blackberry is far superior to the iPhone. Blackberry was created with business use in mind. While it may have a slower CPU, the Blackberry makes up for it with its office applications. There is a reason its nicknamed the Crackberry. Have you ever seen a sales guy not fiddling with or talking on his Blackberry phone? The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution has been approved for storing and transmitting sensitive data by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as government organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, Australia and New Zealand.

The iPhone has more storage, a faster CPU and more RAM. All great attributes for playing games. As Ive witnessed at work, the iPhone is the anti-productivity phone. Dont pretend like you are holier than thou and dont spend countless work hours downloading apps and playing the new Iron Man game or any of the thousand other games.

Recently, the iPhone became compatible with Exchange Server, which was a huge step toward integrating with business. The iPhone has made great strides in favor of business use. Many businesses are making the switch and many handy applications are specific to certain industries, such as medical apps for drug reference or symptom tracking that are gaining popularity with those in the medical field. However, there are still security concerns with the phone, though those are being addressed. It also doesnt help the iPhone for business that its only available on AT&T in the United States. Companies like to price shop and AT&Ts service isnt that great in all areas.

When I get a phone, I dont want to wait for the patch that will make it secure: I want it to come secure. That hurts the iPhone for business use at its current stage. Apple is making strides in the security department, as all new iPhones come equipped with MobileMe, which allows you to find your lost iPhone as well as remotely wipe its memory clean.

As for personal usage, the Blackberry is a sturdy and reliable phone. But due to the wide range of applications and amazing graphical interface and selection of games, the iPhone wins the personal use battle by a wide margin.

So this category is a draw. Blackberry wins for business use and security, iPhone wins for personal use. Blackberry + 1, iPhone + 1

Never forget the Chuck Norris Factor.

Really, it all comes down to Chuck Norris, because if he doesnt like it, hell roundhouse kick it out of existence. The Blackberry sports a great game simply called Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain. Meanwhile, the Apple store rejected a Chuck Norris app, a Chuck Norris joke generator, because they claimed it ridiculed a public figure. Dont they know that its impossible to ridicule Chuck Norris? More importantly, shunning Chuck Norris in whatever format is like challenging Superman to a duel by slapping him with Kyrptonite gloves. Or, its like slapping Chuck Norris in the face with your ungloved hand. This round clearly goes to the Blackberry as its probably what Chuck Norris is using. Blackberry + 1

The Winner

Final tally: iPhone +3, Blackberry + 3.

Listen, I carry a Blackberry. Im not going for hip or trendy, Im going for functionality. I want to be able to check my e-mail at stoplights. I want to be able to picture message without jumping through hoops. When it comes to functioning in the business world and having a practical phone, the Blackberry wins hands down. The iPhone is a fun phone and has a lot of cool features and applications. I really wanted an iPhone, but realized that it was a want. Its a neat toy, but I cant see it moving into the business world and becoming what the Blackberry is to business yet. The best solution Ive seen so far: Many Blackberry owners I know also have an iPod Touch for all their entertainment and portable gaming needs. So its a best of both worlds if you will. Im sure that waffling answer wont satisfy the masses.

The bottom line is, were geeks. Geeks like awesome tech toys and the iPhone is certainly that. From its gaming to its thousands of unique and specific applications, its a device that every geek wants to carry even if they already have a Blackberry. So the iPhone gets a +1 for geek factor and wins this debate.
