Perhaps one other design constraint, the cultural psychology that somehow the smaller a device is the better it is. They are ergonomically terrible unless you have the hands of a three year old. Touchscreens relieve this somewhat. Aesthetics of cell phones are also terrible. One basic design, something the shape of a soap bar. Rotary dial phones were often works of art and great engineering. 100 years from now, what cell phone will be remember as great in terms of ergonomics or art? Few or none.

Bill, just to clarify, A-GPS is actually better than regular GPS. It uses the cell phone towers for trilateration for a quicker fix, then actual GPS to zone in on phone. It gets quicker fixes but is still as accurate as a normal GPS.

That smaller battery used to demonstrate the difference from the older one is the battery that is in my current phone.
